Demography Is Destiny - organized by José Guadalupe Garza and Miríam Ruiz

St. Louis, MO — Monaco is pleased to present Demography Is Destiny, organized by José Guadalupe Garza and Miríam Ruiz. The exhibition will open on Friday, September 13, from 7:00 – 10:00 pm. The exhibition will run through October 11, 2019.

Demography Is Destiny will feature work by Eliana Cristancho, José Guadalupe Garza, Patrick Gutierrez, Julianna Jackson, Gonz Jove, Carol Lara, Julía López, Moacyr Marcini, Marlena Nájera Gómez, Mario Orduña, Luisa Otero Prada, Zaida Phillips-Mejía, Maria Alejandra Reyes Aparicio, Fabio Rodriguez, Valeria Rodriguez, Miríam Ruiz, Mayra Sherman, Javier Torres, and Norma West.

By the year 2045, Latinx residents will represent the largest demographic group in the United States, a population shift that will have a lasting and indelible impact upon all forms of American culture. In anticipation of this inevitable alteration of the American landscape, Demography Is Destiny takes this simple statistical fact as its thesis and invites local Latinx visual artists to present their work as the future face of America and force in St. Louis. Instead of curating a selection of works that fit a narrative or address the same theme, artists submitted work of their own choosing to represent the multi-faceted nature of Latinx communities. Demography Is Destiny allows one to imagine a near future full of possibility and hope in a present where the general tide toward Latinx populations is fraught with suspicion and derision. At the same time, this destiny is not insured in light of the current regime’s attempts to undermine Latinx peoples’ voices through voter suppression and discriminatory census questions, auguring a future where Latinxs are a disempowered majority.

Para el año 2045, residentes Latinx representaran el grupo demográfico mas grande de los Estados Unidos,  un cambio que tendrá un impacto perdurable e indeleble sobre todo sector de la cultura Americana. Anticipando esta modificación inevitable del panorama Americano, Demography Is Destiny toma esta simple realidad estadística como su tesis e invita a la comunidad local de artistas visuales Latinx a que presenten su obras de arte como el future rostro de Los Estados Unidos y una fuerza contundente en St. Louis. En vez de recopilar una selección de obras con una narrativa especifica o con un tema determinado, los artistas hicieron sumisiones de su propia elección, permitiendo representar la esencia multifacética de la colectiva Latinx. Demography Is Destiny nos invita a imaginar un futuro, no muy lejano, lleno de posibilidad y esperanza durante una época de dificultad e incertidumbre para tantos miembros de la comunidad Latinx en este país. Al mismo tiempo,  este destino no esta asegurado debido a las esfuerzos de este régimen, que intentan debilitar a la comunidad y silenciar las voces de las masas Latinxs por medio de la supresión electoral y preguntas discriminatorias en el census Americano; maniobras que pudieran edificar un futuro donde la población Latinx es una mayoría excluida y desposeída.
