Project Gallery: Between Spaces

October 18 - November 9, 2019

St. Louis, MO — Monaco is pleased to present Between Spaces, organized by Yowshien Kuo, featuring St. Louis based artist Daniel Stumeier. The exhibition will open on Friday, October 18, from 7:00 – 10:00 pm and run through November 9, 2019.

Daniel Stumeier examines American popular culture—specifically that of the Midwest. His choice of imagery reflects his own experiences growing up in rural Illinois and his contemplation of these experiences against America’s attitudes toward class, race, and masculinity. The majority of his studio practice is focused on small-scale graphite drawings and more recently, drypoint printmaking. These are ways for me to meditate upon and reconsider subjects about which he feels both nostalgic and ambivalent. These works are not intended to be sentimental but rather an earnest portrayal of the blue-collar, pre-dominantly white community that he is a part of, but do not fully understand or embrace. Through art he is able to acknowledge the culture of whiteness he grew up in, understand the privilege that comes with this, and how this privilege is denied or not seen within this community.

Daniel Stumeier is a St. Louis-based artist and educator. His artwork has been exhibited at the Schmidt Art Center, Reese Gallery, Granite City Art and Design District, and fort gondo compound for the arts. Stumeier holds a B.F.A. from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and an M.F.A. from the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Art at Washington University.
