Dikhotomia
September 10 - October 16, 2021
Monaco is pleased to present Dikhotomia, an exhibition of paintings from Monaco member Howard Krohn. The exhibition opens with a reception, 6 – 9 pm, on Friday, September 10, 2021 and will run through October 16, 2021.
These paintings are products of play, constructed in layers, largely through improvisation. Gestures rendered digitally and translated by hand bridge dichotomies of virtual and physical mark making.
Consider the word “abstract” in its verb form, meaning pull away, remove, detach, or withdraw. My methodology incorporates processes both additive and subtractive, fast and slow, procedural and chaotic, deliberate and automatic. This approach produces a juxtaposition of hard and soft edges, transparency and opaqueness, forms large and small, subtle and overt, silly and formal, colorful and muted.
These paintings are intended for slow and visceral contemplation. Experience this exhibition as an act of empathy, playfully, with your body through your eyes. There are no coded references, hidden messages, or oblique agendas. There is only paint - on the surface and below it.
